Chapter 12

Cecelia

After dinner that evening, Dominic, Pepper, and I got into the car. Dominic had explained that it was a three hour drive to where we would be meeting with Madam Vadoma, and we did not want to be late. We were purposely leaving an hour early just to make sure that we did not arrive late.

Crystal and Pepper had arrived shortly after lunch earlier that day with everything that belonged to me from my dorm room. It really wasn’t much. There was my pillow and blankets, my clothes, and my school supplies and textbooks.

I didn’t have any kind of pictures or knickknacks to remind me of home. I’d never had a home, so I had pretty much given Gloria free reign with the walls of the room. She had filled them with posters of her favorite bands along with a large bulletin board that held memories from things she had done and places she had visited.

Everything I owned had filled four boxes, and I realized now how sad that seemed. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to work at the diner anymore. But now that I didn’t have to worry about room and board at the university, the only expense I had was my tuition that would still be covered by the student loans and grants, and my cellphone. I had plenty of money in my checking account to cover the bill for my phone quite some time.

As Dominic drove us out of town, I was grateful that I was sitting in the backseat of the car. Pepper seemed nice enough, although, she was more serious than the rest of the people who lived in the house, and she was always quiet and seemed deep in thought. Who knew what she thought about me and the fact that I now was living with them.

Every once in a while, I caught her looking over at me with curiosity on her face. It was as if she were trying to figure me out. Well, if she ever did, I hoped that she would fill me in because at the moment, my life seemed like one big shit show.

It was already dark when we left the house, so there wasn’t much to see out the windows as we drove. Once we got on the interstate, Dominic and Pepper started talking about what seemed like business having to do with the pack, and I didn’t want to intrude.

The silence around me and the darkness in the backseat was actually comforting. It was familiar, and I relaxed against the back of the seat.

I felt like I was once again back in the shadows, where I had spent the first twenty years of my life, hiding from everyone and everything as I tried to disappear into my own little world. The last forty-eight hours had been unsettling, full of discoveries that I wasn’t sure I appreciated the explanations for.

I longed to go back to that time when I had first started school. That had been a time when my nightmares weren’t real, and I knew that I didn’t have to be afraid of them.
